About the Region

Welcome to the Outer Banks Region of the Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association.

The Outer Banks Region of CNPA is comprised of northeast North Carolina, a land rich in history and ecological diversity. From the Great Dismal Swamp at the Virginia border through the vast farm fields, forests and rivers to the legendary beaches of the Outer Banks, the region is home to a myriad of wildlife and landscapes.

The ancient, moss covered cedars that bore witness to the dawn of the country, the sounds, marshes, rivers and canals that meander and twist through the countryside, the dynamic and dramatic coastline all combine to provide homes to a variety of wildlife, from wolves, coyotes, bear, deer and otters to herons, egrets, shorebirds, raptors and waterfowl.

The North Atlantic Flyway passes over and through northeast North Carolina, and consequently, the Outer Banks Region is noted for its wintering waterfowl and migratory birds.

About Us

The Outer Banks Region is a group of nature photographers representing northeast North Carolina who come together to share, socialize and learn from one another. The Region was formed in 2008 and continues to grow with new members.

Our Members come from a wide geographic area ranging from the southeast border of Virginia to as far west as the Roanoke Rapids area and down as far south as the Emerald Isle area.

Our goals as a group of nature photographers are to promote nature photography in the Carolinas, to help conserve and preserve the diverse Natural Ecosystem in the Carolinas and to educate other interested in nature photography.

What We Offer

Monthly Meetings: The Outer Banks Region usually meets the Monday after our outings. Our meetings are held from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the Dare County Library, 400 Mustian Street, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948. The library is located one block behind the Kill Devil Hills Post Office. Around Mile Post 8.5 turn west on Colington Road (south send of Wright Memorial) and almost immediately turn left of Mustian Street. The library will be on the right.

Monthly Outings/Field Trips: Join other nature photographers on scheduled monthly outings to a variety of place in and around our Region with opportunities to photograph wildlife, nature, birds, flowers, macro and landscapes.

Educational Program/Presentations: Each meeting we feature a program whether it is a member sharing their photographic knowledge, a slideshow of member images, a professional photographer/presenter educating others on photographic techinques or image critiques among peers.

Quarterly Photo Contests: At the beginning of each quarter (January, April, July and October) we hold a photo contest among members of the Outer Banks Region. The topics may vary each quarter, and the contest is judged by peers.

Regional Forum for Photography Discussion: This is a place where members can find out about Regional activities or discuss photography topics with other members. The forum can be accessed by the Outer Banks Region website or at the CNPA website. Other forums on the CNPA website include general discussion, image critiques, equipment and other Regional forums.

CNPA Annual Meeting: Each year CNPA hosts a three day meeting with a variety of programs and nature subjects from world-renown professional nature photographers and educators. It is a chance to socialize with members from CNPA's ten Regions.

In addition, a Mid-Year Outing is held at different locations within North and South Carolina with customized outings for each location.

Newsletters: CNPA posts on its website an electronic quarterly newsletter with articles written by members on topics such as photo tips, field locations, experiences with nature photography and more. In addition, each year a full-color handbook is mailed out to each member that has information and details about the upcoming annual meeting, winners of the Member's Choice Contest and other news and articles.

Socialization Opportunities: The Outer Banks Region members often get together for impromptu breakfast, lunch or dinner after our monthly outings. Also, there is time before and after each meeting to visit with other members. At least once a year members get together for a holiday part in December.
